It May Be Better To Travel Out of State Than Stay At Home If There Is A Crisis In Your State

Sometimes certain environments trigger a desire to abuse drugs or alcohol in some people. It is not unusual for an individual who struggles with alcohol abuse to need to avoid bars and party atmospheres. People who struggle with drugs may find that they feel less included to use drugs if they avoid certain parts of town. An individual’s home life or workplace may also be a trigger. For these reasons, addiction recovery centers most often recommend new clients enroll in a residential treatment program. Residential rehab provides a safe, isolated environment.

Some people may find that it is not enough to begin the road to recovery by entering rehab in the same city or state. This may be true of people who live in communities in which addiction rates are extremely high. People who would prefer to protect their identity while receiving treatment and those who have an extensive local network of others who support their addiction may also need to get away to enter rehab. In these cases, it may be better to travel out of state if there is a crisis in your state.

Traveling Overseas to Enter a Drug or Alcohol Rehab

Some of the best opportunities to get clean and sober are in other states. Going out of state allows the addict to escape the everyday stressors and triggers that can make it more challenging to stop drinking or using drugs. Other destinations generally facilitate a more open mindset that can make it easier for the client to have more positive feelings toward recovery. Many clients seek out locations that offer a relaxing, vacation-like experience. Some international treatment centers offer holistic modalities that can further support the recovery process. In some countries, rehab centers offer excellent treatment at much lower costs than rehab centers in some locations.

Choosing a Rehab Center Out of State

When searching for a treatment center in another state, limit your search to licensed facilities. Although you will be outside the jurisdiction of licensing agencies within your state or, other states have agencies that oversee the quality of rehab facilities. There are also licensing and certification agencies that will likely have more universal standards.

After focusing your search on credentialed facilities, investigate the curriculum your potential treatment center of choice offers. Look for programs that offer programs that are based on proven approaches like 12-Steps, SMART Recovery, and cognitive behavioral therapy-focused approaches. If you are looking for an experience that is remarkably different than what might be available to you at home, there are treatment programs that base their curricula on mainstream approaches while implementing cultural and environmental influences, exercise, meditation, holistic healing, and other unique elements that may enhance your treatment experience.

Staff Member Qualifications

Treatment centers employ clinicians and staff members with different levels of experience and professional credentials. Look for treatment centers that employ licensed therapists who have graduate degrees, certified counselors, and other staff members who have knowledge and experience in their occupations. Seek out reviews and recommendations that confirm the treatment center’s level of quality in the level of service and effectiveness.

Ask About Aftercare

Whether you would like to remain in another state or return home after completing your program, having an aftercare plan will help you stay clean and sober. Choose a treatment center that offers an aftercare program such as outpatient treatment or another step-down program that will continue to provide the structure, counseling, and sense of community-based on your needs after entering rehab. If you plan to return home, a rehab center that will transfer your program files or otherwise communicate with a recovery center at home that will continue to provide services to you will make for a smoother return to daily life.
